We open our season with an homage to one of North America’s icons of jazz, Nina Simone. Writer, poet and activist, Nina’s music provides the soundtrack for Alysa Pires’ newest piece commissioned by Citie Ballet. Opening the evening is a new work by Citie Ballet artistic director Jorden Morris.
With exquisite artistry, Rechercher explores our need as human beings to constantly search for something more; whether it be for material possessions, a better job, a faster route to work, or the right partner in life. Jorden Morris brings together his musings from a lifetime of international travel and his own quests to lead us down the winding paths of our universal searches, what they say about us, and ultimately, why the answers we seek are so important.
“We are all wanderers on this earth, with our heart and minds full of wonder, and our souls are deep with dreams.”

Set to the soulful music of jazz icon Nina Simone, If You Knew explores the human experience in all of its complexities. Love, loss, lust, loneliness: Simone’s poignant lyrics speak to what it means to be alive. Through athletic physicality and tender intimacy, If You Knew uses Simone’s emotional music to highlight universal themes of human interaction.
