This March, Ballet Edmonton presents Soft Currents, a contemporary performance inspired by murmurations, the shifting formations of starlings moving together in shared rhythm and direction.
Created as a task-based work with original sound, Soft Currents explores how a group listens, adapts, and moves with collective awareness. Built on a structured, collaboratively developed score for an ensemble of dancers, the choreography invites each artist to tune into their own physical sensations while remaining deeply responsive to one another.
The work unfolds across multiple spaces within the Art Gallery of Alberta, allowing the choreography to respond directly to its architectural and social environment. Wearing headphones, the dancers receive spoken text developed by the choreographer in conversation with the artists. These cues are heard only by the performers in real time. What the audience witnesses is a living, shifting performance that moves between unison and individual expression.
At its heart, Soft Currents reflects Ballet Edmonton’s ongoing interest in collaboration, care, and shared responsibility. It asks how individual choices shape the whole, and how a group can move forward together.
