Touring Repertoire

Night Breath

World Premiere Edmonton, Alberta, October 2023
choreography by Ethan Colangelo
This process began as an exploration of sensation and tasks with the beautiful dancers of Ballet Edmonton.

"My work is not driven by narrative, it explores ideas and concepts: meditation versus chaos, ecstasy versus anxiety. I wanted to create a visual landscape where these ideas meet and pull apart and create a dream-like state that allows the audience to find places of connection and relatability so they come with us on this journey. Having the composer Ben Waters be part of the process has been such a gift. It allowed the music to be built with detail in real-time as the piece was being constructed." -Ethan Colangelo

Ethan Colangelo *World Premiere
Born and raised in Toronto, Ethan is an alumnus of The Juilliard School where he received the Hector Zaraspe Prize for Choreographic Promise. As a choreographer he has presented his work at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur, Juilliard’s Choreographic Honors Showcases, APAP 2018, Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Colangelo was also one of ten choreographers selected for the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition in 2018 and in 2021. Colangelo is increasingly in demand as a creator and a voice to watch.

Behind the Scenes

Le Quattro

World Premiere Edmonton, Alberta, May 2019
choreography by Wen Wei Wang
Le Quattro first debuted in Edmonton in 2019 and has been revisited this season. Set to Max Richter’s bold and intricate reimagining of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, this evolution of the original Le Quattro is an invigorating rendering of Vivaldi’s work, so familiar to many. Ballet Edmonton Artistic Director Wen Wei Wang's choreographic reimagining of Richter's postmodernist recomposition takes us through the changing seasons. Using the music as inspiration, Wang’s choreography invokes images of nature and how we witness the changes in our environment.

Music: Recomposed - The Four Seasons

Valei-me

World Premiere Edmonton, Alberta, May 2022
choreography by Diego Ramalho
Valei-me contemplates how we are influenced by where we first “belonged.” The work explores how music lives in the nervous system and reflects an unconscious sense of identity connected to place. Brazilian music drives the narrative structure of this emotional and energetic piece.

“I want the audience to be free to bring their own ideas about what I am saying and imagine their own sense of place and belonging."
- Diego Ramalho.

SWAN (17 min)

World Premiere Vancouver, BC, 2017
choreography by Wen Wei Wang
Swan by Ballet Edmonton Artistic Director Wen Wei Wang is a remount of his masterful piece, which first debuted with Ballet BC in 2016. Inspired by the iconic characters in Swan Lake, this breathtaking work highlights Wang’s capacity to move dancers in ways that exemplify the poise and grace of the balletic dancer while expanding the vocabulary of movement to tell a familiar story through a new lens.

“SWAN, choreographed by Wen Wei Wang, proved itself as a stunning, flawless endeavour that had its audience breathless by the time the curtain closed…”
- Lords of Dogwood

Sum of All Parts (27 min)

World Premiere Edmonton, Alberta, May 2019
choreography by Gioconda Barbuto
World Premiere May 3, 2019, Edmonton, AB

This stunning new piece by Gioconda Barbuto explores the physical dialogue that develops in a collective atmosphere. This work reflects how we shape, shift, mold and encompass space. The audience will be immersed in a physical conversation; a manifestation of orchestral movement and honest intent.
